Former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has alleged that his convoy was violently attacked by suspected political thugs in Birnin Kebbi, the Kebbi State capital.
Malami, in a statement on Monday, said the incident occurred near his private residence while he was returning from condolence visits to the Emir of Gwandu and the family of the late Imam Tukur Kola.
According to him, the assailants, believed to have emerged from the All Progressives Congress (APC) state headquarters located close to his residence, hurled stones and dangerous objects at his convoy, leaving several vehicles damaged and some individuals injured, with cases of fractures reported.
“What is most disturbing is that this was not an isolated act of hooliganism. Evidence clearly points to a politically orchestrated attack, allegedly funded and coordinated by powerful figures who have abandoned governance at the altar of do-or-die politics,” Malami alleged.
He further claimed that notable APC stalwarts and close associates of the state governor were present during the attack, while security operatives failed to make any arrests as the attackers allegedly took cover within the party secretariat.
Malami condemned the incident as a dangerous precedent in Kebbi’s political landscape, stressing that it was not about him personally but about the threat posed to democracy and good governance.
“This is about the dangerous path our state and our country are treading, where thuggery replaces dialogue, and intimidation replaces governance, while over 133 million Nigerians live in multidimensional poverty according to NBS statistics,” he said.
The former justice minister warned that the Kebbi State Government should fear the consequences of its actions and the judgment of history rather than political rivals.
“I stand firm in my belief that politics must never be reduced to violence, and power must never be pursued at the cost of innocent lives. People of Kebbi State are entitled to their constitutional rights to freedom of movement, speech, and association. Their resources must be deployed in protecting their lives and property, not otherwise,” he declared.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kebbi State Government and the state chapter of the APC were yet to respond to the allegations.
